Marc Convey - Co-Founder - Thrive Now

Marc's story is truly inspiring, he talks about how his life changed at 14 when he suffered severe burns in an accident in Ireland, how he nearly died twice and how that first day back in school after the accident was the one of toughest of his life. Yet his determination and positive attitude to make the most of life took him on a journey into the world of poker to starting his own business 23D in 2017. Then during Covid after losing nearly 90% of planned revenue in a week he had to once again adapt and pivot. Wolfram Syndrome, also called DIDMOAD (Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Optic Atrophy and Deafness), is a rare genetic disorder, causing the four conditions that make up the name, as well as various other possible disorders.

Diabetes Mellitus can be controlled with insulin injections while vision problems usually, but not always, get worse. Often a patient will be registered blind within eight years of diagnosis.

About three quarters of patients get Diabetes Insipidus and two thirds become deaf in their teenage years. About two thirds experience renal problems in their twenties and a similar proportion get neurological complications in their thirties. However, there appears to be a subgroup of patients who run a milder course and don’t have these additional complications.

Any cure is a long way off. The current research is to understand why mistakes in the Wolfram gene cause the syndrome. There are research groups in America, UK, Germany and Japan all investigating this problem.

Elliott Halser - Writer / Director

Elliott Hasler is a British film director and screenwriter, best known for his upcoming professional feature debut, 'Vindication Swim'. The film has undergone three years of production with filming taking place in the English Channel itself, followed by a year of post-production at Warner Bros. De Lane Lea Studios.

'Vindication Swim' is the story from 1927, of Mercedes Gleitz, the first British woman to swim the English Channel and her battle against both cold waters of the Channel and the oppresive society of the 1920s England.

Hasler's passion for filmmaking began at a young age, with the production of 'WWII: The Long Road Home'. Made whilst at school and completed in 2017 when Hasler was just 16 years old, the film garnered praise from New York critic Graham Fuller who described the film as "a miracle achievement for a schoolboy director". That same year Hasler founded the UK based independent film company, Relsah Films.

Before pursuing 'Vindication Swim', Hasler developed his directing and writing style further by making a series of short films, including 'To Hunt a Tiger', which was shot in Sri Lanka at the same locations as David Lean's 'The Bridge on the River Kawi' (one of Hasler's greatest inspirations). 'To Hunt a Tiger' premiered in July 2019 at Soneva Jani's over-water cinema in the Maldives.

Martlets is a local charity that provides terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas, with the very best care and support. Our expert team helps patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left.
Martlets opened in 1997. The staff and services were formed from the merger of three separate charities: Coppercliff Hospice, Tarner and MacMillan Day Hospice. Across the hospice services, more than 34,000 local people have been supported and cared for since 1997. Most people receive care from us in their own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others choose to spend their final days here, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Thank you for your generous support – it enables us to provide exceptional care that changes lives.

Ryan Heal - Best Of British Events

Ryan Heal was the managing director of Juice FM, back in 2006 and founded the very first BBBC, which at the time was the Juice Business Breakfast. 11 people attended that first event, and over the following months and years, it grew to regularly attract over 100 attendees. Ryan was also the CEO of local childrens charity Rockinghorse, until 2021 when he left to concentrate on his events firm 'Best Of British Events' of which he holds across Sussex and helps to raise many thousands of pounds to local charities. Ryan has recently been awarded Sussex Chambers 'Entreprenuer of the year' and went on to win 'Entrepreneur of the year' for the South East of England.
